‘Life is a mathematical equation. In order to gain the most, you have to know how to convert negatives into positives.’ Anonymous
At Beecroft Academy, Mathematics is taught through a mastery approach following the White Rose Maths curriculum. Our approach is designed to develop pupil’s knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts from Early Years through to the end of Year 6. Provoking a fascination with the different concepts whilst creating confident, fluent and efficient mathematicians.
We want our pupils to ‘Achieve Excellence Together’ by planning aspirational and engaging lessons that teach the essential knowledge and skills to equip them for their future in school and later life.
Following the White Rose Maths Curriculum, teachers plan lessons that reflect three main representations:
Concrete - Pupils will have the chance to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.
Pictorial - Alongside the concrete, pupils will use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems.
Abstract - Both the concrete and pictorial representations will support pupil’s understanding of abstract methods.
We explicitly teach our pupils to use the appropriate mathematical language when developing their ability in reasoning and problem solving. Using our ‘Big Ideas’, we are able to plan and teach investigative activities that allow the pupils to identify patterns, make connections and retrieve specific knowledge that can then be used to assist in building new knowledge and understanding. By providing a range of assessment opportunities, teachers are able to use adaptive teaching to ensure the appropriate level of scaffolding and challenge is given to ensure success and progress by all.
TTRockstars is used to inspire and generate excitement when learning our timetables and we celebrate the success of our champions each week. Pupils are encouraged to recognise the significance of their timetables knowledge and how this connects and creates a better understanding of other key areas such as multiplication, division and fractions.

TT Rock Stars
We use TT Rock Stars to support the children in learning their times tables. It is a fun interactive online programme which supports children in learning all of their times tables. The children can challenge each other in battles to earn points. As a school, we compete against each other and other schools regularly across the school year. The ‘Top Three’ champions for speed, correct answers or from different skill areas are shared weekly in the celebration assembly.
