‘Science is magic that works.’
Kurt Vonnegut
At Beecroft Academy, we have designed an aspirational curriculum to provoke curiosity, wonder and excitement. Science is all around us and helps pupils to make sense of the world.
We use the Cornerstones Curriculum to plan engaging sessions that develop rich knowledge and scientific skills for all pupils. We explore the key concepts within the three main areas Biology, Chemistry and Physics and teach pupils how to work scientifically with a range of investigative and practical activities. Vocabulary used in science is taught explicitly to enable the pupils to be able to talk about their learning effectively, retrieve knowledge and make connections with the new learning in each session.
All pupils can be scientists and ‘Achieve Excellence Together’ following their own natural curiosity and our teachers plan lessons that help to facilitate these skills in order for pupils to flourish. Pupils are able to explore ‘The Big Ideas’ significance, growth, change, democracy and investigation in relation to science recognising significant scientists from history that have impacted and changed the way in which we live today. They learn to ask questions for further enquiry and recognise that a scientist observes, questions, creates hypotheses, undertakes experiments, records data and then analyses that data to show findings.
As well as learning about natural phenomena, we embrace new innovations and technologies preparing pupils to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
